In a very emotional way, with such a move that can break the very strong and mighty, President Mohammadu Buhari, on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, has tendered an unreserved apology to the family and person of the late Business Mogul and the scion of Abiola family, the presumed winner of June 12th 1993 presidential election for the injustice done to the man and his family by the leader of the nation then.
President Buhari apologized to the family of the business man today, June 12, 2018 while honouring him with a posthumous award as ‘ Grand Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria ( GCFR )’ and the recognition of June 12 as the Democracy Day in the nation.
It is on record that Chief MKO Won the election conducted by NEC, ably led by Prof Humphrey Nwosu by having 8.3 Million Votes (SDP)against Bashir Tofa who had 5.9 Million Votes (NRC). But the military junta of the nation led by General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida annulled the election. This very incident changed the course of action of the nation and was seen as an injustice that must be remedied.
He asked the family to forget the past and forgive the injustice metted to them by the ruling class and by extension, the nation so that the wound can be healed.
Hafzat Abiola, while giving her speech, with a sonorous voice filled with sounds controlled by emotion, also on behalf of the family of Abiola, apologized to President Buhari for whatever wrong her father could have done against him. This might be connected with the belief that MKO was a good friend of Babangida who planned the coup that ousted Buhari from power in 1985 as the Military Head of State.
Hafzat Abiola, as a result of the battle for the mandate given to her father by the people of Nigeria, but which was taken away from him by the strong and mighty in the nation then, lost both her father, Chief MKO Abiola and her mother, Chief (Mrs) Kudirat Abiola being killed allegedly by the military government of Nigeria being led by Gen Sani Abacha. So, she became orphaned by her own country.
The speech by Hafzat shook the whole auditorium and brought a nostalgic feeling into the house. Everyone present Asiwaju Tinubu, Chief Bisi Akande, Prof Wole Soyinka, Barrister Femi Falana, all the serving ministers, family and friends of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Babangana Kingibe, Chief Abiola, etc were thrilled and touched by her speech.
